Dancing question. Group of people dancing in a circle to music at a party?

music trends
I’m Ur Huckleberry asked:

I was at a party last night. It was a girl around 18’s party. She and her friends were all in a huge circle dancing to the techno and facing forward. No one would jump into the middle of the circle and dance/show off. It was the most curious thing. Is this typical of this generation? What is the point? I’m certain it is a new trend, what is supposed to happen. Everyone just stands there and dances to the music looking at each other? It was like something more was supposed to happen. Someone do explain this to me.
